Consumer Alert: Major Safety Recall Issued for Nearly 900,000 Honda and Acura Vehicles

Owners of several popular Honda and Acura SUV and truck models are being urged to check their vehicle identification numbers (VINs) immediately following a massive safety recall announced yesterday by federal regulators. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) confirmed that Honda is recalling over 880,000 vehicles due to a critical suspension defect caused by premature corrosion of the rear subframe.

The recall specifically impacts the following models:

• Honda Pilot (2016–2022)

• Honda Ridgeline (2017–2023)

• Honda Passport (2019–2023)

• Acura MDX (2014–2020)

According to the recall documents, the rear subframes on these vehicles may not have been coated properly during manufacturing, leading to insufficient paint adhesion. This defect allows road salt and moisture to trigger rapid rust, which can cause the metal to thin and fracture at suspension mounting points. In worst-case scenarios, this could lead to rear suspension component failure, significantly impacting

the driver’s ability to control the vehicle.

While Honda estimates only about 1% of the affected vehicles currently contain the defect, the company is taking a proactive approach. Dealers will inspect the rear subframes and install a reinforcement kit or replace components as necessary, free of charge. Official notification letters are scheduled to be mailed out on July 7, but owners are encouraged to check their VINs on the official NHTSA recall website starting today.
